How to Make a Calendar in Notion in 3 Easy Steps

Notion is more than just a note-taking app; it's a robust tool that helps you organize every aspect of your life.

One of its most powerful features is versatility which allows you to create customisable calendars that connect seamlessly with your other databases.

In this guide, we'll walk you through how to make a calendar in Notion in three easy steps, while also showing you how to maximise its functionality with tips and advanced features.

Step 1: Create a New Database for Your Calendar

First thing to understand is that calendars are ALWAYS databases. So, the first step in creating a calendar in Notion is to start with a blank database. There are two ways to create a new database, so let’s see the steps you need to take:

  1. Open Notion and navigate to the workspace where you want to create your calendar.
  2. Decide on where you want to create your calendar and navigate there.
  3. Create a new database. Here are 2 ways you can do it:
    • Type “/data” and select either “Database - Inline” if you want the calendar to be on the page you are in right now, or “Database - Full Page” if you want to create the calendar as a separate page inside the current one.
    • Create a new page by typing “/page” and selecting the “Page” option, then turning it into a database by selecting “Table”.

Once your new page is set up, you’re ready to start building your calendar.

Step 2: Add a Calendar View to Your Page

Now that you have a blank database ready, it's time to add a calendar view to it.

  1. In order to have a working calendar, the first thing you will need, is a “Date” property:
    • Add a new property using the “+” icon
    • Select type Date
    • Name it as you want
  2. After creating a date property,  you are ready to create a new Calendar view:
    • Add a new view using the “+” icon
    • Select “Calendar”

That’s it, now you have a calendar that uses your “date property* to schedule your database entries. If you have multiple date type properties, be sure to use the one that you want:

  • Open the database options by clicking on the “•••” icon
  • Go to “Layouts”
  • Under “Show Calendar by” select the property you want

Step 3: Customize Your Calendar for Better Organization

After creating your Calendar view, the final step is to customize your calendar to suit your specific needs.

Notion offers a variety of ways to tweak your calendar and make it more functional:

  1. Add Properties:

Click on the “•••” → “Properties” → “New Property” to include additional fields such as tags, project names, deadlines, or assignees. This is particularly useful if you’re managing multiple projects or tasks simultaneously.

  1. Filter and Sort:

Use Notion’s filter and sort options to view your calendar in different ways. For example, you can filter meetings by groups/tags like “1 - 1” or “Management” meetings.

  1. Change Layout

Notion offers two different calendar views, allowing you to manage your time with the level of detail that suits your needs. Each view provides a unique perspective, making it easier to track tasks and events based on how you prefer to visualize your schedule.

  • Monthly View: The monthly calendar view is ideal for getting a broad overview of your schedule. It displays all tasks, events, and deadlines within a month, allowing you to see your commitments at a glance. This view is particularly useful for long-term planning, such as project timelines or personal goals.
  • Weekly View: The weekly view zooms in to show a seven-day window. This view is perfect for more detailed planning, where you can focus on the tasks and events you need to tackle in the short term. It’s especially helpful for managing week-by-week work schedules or personal appointments.

You can create two separate calendar views, one for month and one for week. To change the calendar layout follow the steps below:

  • Click on the “•••” icon
  • Go to “Layouts”
  • Choose “Week” or “Month” under “Show Calendar as”

All-in-One Overview:

Having all your information in one place means you no longer have to switch between multiple apps or pages. Your Notion homepage pulls together calendars, tasks, notes, and more, providing an all-in-one overview of your day, week, or month.

Here’s how to set up your Notion Homepage:

  • Add your Google Calendar: On your Notion Homepage, the 2 section named “Upcoming events” will show you your calendar events after connecting your Notion workspace to Notion Calendar.
  • Here you’ll be able to select the Calendars you want to see, decide on how many days in advance you want to see your events, and use other filters to see at a glance exactly what you need at the moment.
  • Add your Events databases: Below “Upcoming events” & maybe “My Tasks” sections, you have one called “Database Views”. Here you can add any database that you want to have it on your Homepage. Here you can add multiple databases like “Meetings” or “Content” Calendar.

The Notion homepage is a relatively new feature and it is one that we’ve been waiting for so long. It gives you an all-in-one homepage where you can quickly see your tasks, events and all relevant information that you might need.
